Dow Heaton

The artist grew up in the very sense of the word. Art became a way of life, as his parents,
master metal engravers Bill & Sammy Heaton, were notable and beloved  Taos artist themselves.
Drawing at his father's feet, who was a master of line, heavily influenced Dow's work,
who followed line naturally into sculpture and jewelry fabrication. Heaton's first commission
came ant he age of 14.

Dow's artistic line blend the reality and ambivalence of the spirituality of this enchanted
land. an art cultivated from the site of his mentors, the old Spanish man plowing a furrow or
the innate grace of the dark brown hand of a Indian woman forging through the rich adobe mud,
producing, along with the artist's labors, enduring essence that is Taos.

The artist was always drawing and experimenting, working in wax-cast jewelry, cedar sculpture
and fired metal paintings. His connections with the surrounding land and nature lead him
to his famous fine-line, pen and ink, charcoal drawing of animals, birds and people.
Heaton's material often speaks to him, and he sometimes sees the art emerge from the
wood or canvas before he even begins to work.

Heaton started showing in galleries at the age of 16 and has been represented
in New York, Colorado, Arizona and abroad in Holland and Israel. His art work has
seen many a gallery open and close, and in the process, he continues to produce work.
In Taos alone, he has shown in a dozen galleries.

Today he lives with his loving family in a sculptural adobe home, with fruit trees
and flowers watered from his own hand-dug well. The home, like his art, is
continually in process. The artist feels like he has grown with Taos, and that the best way
to resist change is to do things that are simply and try to do no harm. The line
has led Dow to the perfect path, with Jesus Christ as his patient teacher of
the art of living.
