Log drums are made from whole trees that are hollowed out to a frame thickness between 1.25 to 2.50 inches. They will vary in color from lighter to darker, depending upon the wood. Mother nature offers unique shapes from the natural growth of the tree, not all trees have perfectly round trunks. The same is true for the cow hide that is used on these log drums. Knots from branches, and speckles or streaks on the hide creates for each drum having unique characteristics.
The outside walls are smoothed and sanded. They may result in slight variations in size before a hand-cut hide is stretched over each end and secured with rawhide lacing.
Today, traditional pueblo log drums transcend their ancient roots as instruments of rhythm and function as distinctive display pieces and furnishings. However, we these drums are built for the purpose of drumming.
